About Us

Mission

M-DO, established in 1988, grew out of the shared visions of Kathak dancer Joanna de Souza and Tabla drummer Ritesh Das. Within their chosen disciplines, Joanna and Ritesh have facilitated a greater artistic/cultural awareness in Toronto by creating the opportunities needed for artists to bring world dance and music to new audiences, students and educational partners throughout this great city.

M-DO plays a vital role in the arts community. At our studio in downtown Toronto, we support high caliber training in and performance of various world music and dance genres. As the home of the Toronto Tabla Ensemble and Chhandam Dance Company, and with our affordable rental rates, we continue to support the creation of critically acclaimed works of dance and music.

At M-DO, our focus is community, education and performance. Check out the links to find out more about how we enrich our city and our country.

As of January 2007, our new home is at 355 College Street, just west of Spadina Ave. This new location, which has larger studio spaces for both Kathak and Tabla classes, is fantastic for building our clientele, as it is in the heart of Kensington Market's arts area. We have secured a ten-year lease, which gives us the stability to grow our student population and increase our community educational programming with the confidence of having a long-term home. This new move ensures that M-DO and the Toronto Tabla Ensemble Centre for World Music and Dance, will continue to remain Toronto's premiere centre for the study and performance of music and dance for many years to come.
